SUMMARY:Beneath the Surface: Dances from Within
DESCRIPTION:Experience the power of contemporary dance in RKDC’s fall repertory concert\, “Beneath the Surface: Dances from Within.” This captivating performance mines the depth of our emotional landscape\, translating our human experiences into poignant movement stories. \nThe evening features a diverse array of six works\, including “In the Moment\,” which celebrates the joy of moving\, and highlights how movement is not just about action; it’s an expression of who we are and how we connect with others. Regina Klenjoski’s new work for the company “Nest” reflects on the delicate balance of vulnerability and resilience in the natural process of letting go. \nKia Smith’s “Mix N’ Mingle” brings an abstract flair with its fast\, driving movements set to familiar music\, inviting audiences to feel the joy of connection through dance. Returning to the stage is “Rank of Angels\,” a work inspired by the concept of the nine orders of angels rooted in angelology\, a theological discipline that explores the nature\, roles\, and hierarchy of angels within religious frameworks. \n“Silhouettes\,” a duet about friendship and the enduring bonds that withstand distance\, adds emotional depth\, while a new solo created by Klenjoski\, seeks to embody delicacy and lightness\, revealing the hidden and unseen beauty that lies just beneath the surface. \nJoin us for an evening that celebrates the beauty of dance and the rich narratives that lie beneath the surface. \n\n\nNovember 1 & 2\, 2024 @ 7:30 pm\nMary Jane Teall Theater\n225 West Douglas Avenue\, Wichita\, KS 67202 \nTickets on Sale Now!

SUMMARY:The Golden Apple - CA
DESCRIPTION:“The Golden Apple” is an innovative interdisciplinary contemporary dance production that seamlessly weaves spoken word\, film design\, original music\, and dance together. Drawing inspiration from the Macedonian folk tale The Boy Who Hid in the Golden Apple\, this anti-fairytale explores themes of power and stewardship in a modern context. Artistic Director and Choreographer Regina Klenjoski crafts an imaginative evening-length work that uses contemporary dance as an abstract language to question the impact of economic and social systems on our planet’s conservation. The story follows a young rural protagonist\, who\, with the help of nature’s creatures\, defies a kingdom’s control over wealth\, land\, and people. The Golden Apple is a thought-provoking and visually stunning production that challenges the audience to reflect on our interdependence with the natural world.  Click HERE for tickets. \nChoreography: Regina Klenjoski\nOriginal Music: Michael Wall\nFilm Design: Stephen Goldblatt\nLive Poetry and Narration: Cydnee A. SUMMARY:Emerson SPRING TO DANCE® Festival 2022
DESCRIPTION:RKDC will be performing Emoticons at the Emerson Spring to Dance Festival 2022 in St. Louis on May 29 at 7:30pm. \nAbout the work: \nEmoticons (2011) \nChoreography: Regina Klenjoski \nMusic: David Karagianis \nCostumes: Denise Lichter \nLighting: Original Lighting Design by Eileen Cooley \nDancers:  Aviance Battles\, Elleigh McClelland\, Timothy Portwood\, Rile Reavis\, Rhiannon Vieyra \nEmoticons is a reflection of our growing dependence on technology and its impact on interpersonal relationships.  It examines how the digital world alters our daily lives and asks\, “is technology enabling or disabling our ability to connect?”   \n“The Regina Klenjoski Dance Company oozed\, pulsed\,\nundulated\, bounced\, glided and sailed through the air in\ntheir fearlessly athletic and original “Emoticons”\, under\nthe sure artistic direction of choreographer Regina\nKlenjoski. ” – The Daily Fitchett\, Lisa Fitchett \n“Beautiful partnering and athleticism complemented the motif of communications in an electronic age.”\n-Setting the Dancer Within Free\, Vanessa Adelman \nEmoticons Artist Statement:\nEmoticons is a personal interrogation of technology’s infiltration into our social fabric. At the time of the creation process in 2011 I had three small children and was becoming increasingly concerned at how much screens had become part of our\, and their\, daily lives.  It was and still is difficult to know if our technological ways are enabling or disabling our ability to connect with one another. On one end\,  I was able to reconnect with relatives in Macedonia\, where my family emigrated from\, through social media platforms and digital communication tools that made it easy and affordable to stay in touch\, but on the other end\, I noticed at times my own family would be separated\, each sitting alone staring at an electronic device. \nAdditionally\, the work explores the theme of addiction\, specifically the way necessity transforms into unchecked desire. Emoticons has been performed in Los Angeles\, the midwest\, New York\, and this spring\, St. Louis. Audiences respond strongly to this work because its subject is universally understood.  As technology continues to “improve” our lives and our work\, Emoticons has remained relevant since its debut in 2011. \nI collaborated with composer David Karagianis because I adore his music and found it pulsing\, driving\, and relentless at times. Much like the electrical energy that powers our tech habits.  He developed a beautiful score that was both impersonal and humanistic\, juxtaposing this futuristic cold tech world with moments of humanity and warmth.  In collaborating with costume designer Denise Lichter and lighting Designer Eileen Cooley\, we used the image “plugged in” as a creative theme in our discussions. Denise chose the color grey for the costumes to represent the cold feeling of steel and hand-designed symbols on the costumes as code\, language\, and distilled communication.  Eileen developed a circuit board design through an intricate gobo design for the stage floor\, creating the digital world Emoticons lives in.  The original cast was instrumental in the development of Emoticons and included Anna Bowden\, Deven Brawley\, Danae McWatt\, Sam Propersi\, and Erin Smith. \nABOUT THE FESTIVAL: \nThe Midwest region’s most celebrated dance festival returns for the 14th year! 18 companies from coast to coast flock to St. Louis to bestow their artistry. It’s an unmatched buffet of dance\, featuring three days of nonstop bright\, beautiful dance from a wide array of nationally touring professional companies. We are extremely excited for Emerson SPRING TO DANCE® Festival 2022 to return to its longstanding home at the Touhill Performing Arts Center\, with performances in the 1\,500-seat Anheuser-Busch Performance Hall. \nFRIDAY\, MAY 27 • 7:30 PM\nDance Kaleidoscope (Indianapolis\, IN)\nHelen Simoneau Danse (Winston-Salem\, NC)\nDIAVOLO – Jennifer Olivas & Omar Olivas (Los Angeles\, CA)\nOwen/Cox Dance Group (Kansas City\, MO)\n– Intermission –\nDancing Wheels (Cleveland\, OH)\nPhiladelphia Ballet – Oksana Maslova & Sterling Baca (Philadelphia\, PA)\nTristian Griffin Dance Company (Kansas City\, MO) \nSATURDAY\, MAY 28 • 7:30 PM\nAerial Dance Chicago (Chicago\, IL)\nEnsemble Español Spanish Dance Theater 1st Performance (Chicago\, IL)\nDIAVOLO – Jennifer Olivas & Omar Olivas (Los Angeles\, CA)\nCollage Dance Collective (Memphis\, TN)\n– Intermission –\nChicago Dance Crash (Chicago\, IL)\nEnsemble Español Spanish Dance Theater 2nd Performance (Chicago\, IL)\nWylliams/Henry Contemporary Dance Company (Kansas City\, MO) \nSUNDAY\, MAY 29 • 7:30 PM\nNewsam Aerial Dance (St. Louis\, MO)\nRegina Klenjoski Dance Company (Torrance\, CA / Wichita\, KS)\nDIAVOLO – Jennifer Olivas & Omar Olivas (Los Angeles\, CA)\nDCDC (Dayton Contemporary Dance Company) (Dayton\, OH)\n– Intermission –\nEisenhower Dance Detroit (Detroit\, MI)\nPilobolus – Casey Howes & Jacob Michael Warren (Washington Depot\, CT)\nChicago Tap Theatre (Chicago\, IL)As one of the region’s must-see festivals\, SPRING TO DANCE® offers something for everyone\, from modern\, ballet and contemporary to tap\, aerial\, hip hop\, flamenco and more\, with a distinct\, dynamic program each night. \n

SUMMARY:The Multiplicity of Us
DESCRIPTION:RKDC premieres a new work by choreographer and Artistic Director Regina Klenjoski\, “The Multiplicity of Us.” The dance work features a collaboration with British composer Aurelie Webb and performances by Wichita professional dancers Aviance Battles\, Elleigh McClelland\, Rhiannon Vieyra\, and Rile Reavis. \n“The Multiplicity of Us” is abstract storytelling – through poetry\, text\, and movement – examining the sometimes fluid\, sometimes difficult experience of managing our multiple identities or “hats.” Klenjoski began the work thinking about her first-generation\, bicultural identity.  Cross-cultural differences\, societal expectations\, and personal values play huge roles in how we navigate through the formative years and develop our sense of self.  The dance explores the existence of duality in our lives and celebrates the flexibility\, humanism\, and commonality we find on the way to unity. \nOTHER DETAILS: \nThe performance takes place at the Lux Ballroom in downtown Wichita. The audience will sit in close proximity to the dancers and the experience is limited to 50 patrons per show.
