SUMMARY:The Golden Apple
DESCRIPTION:“The Golden Apple” is an innovative interdisciplinary contemporary dance production that seamlessly weaves spoken word\, film design\, original music\, and dance together. Drawing inspiration from the Macedonian folk tale The Boy Who Hid in the Golden Apple\, this anti-fairytale explores themes of power and stewardship in a modern context. Artistic Director and Choreographer Regina Klenjoski crafts an imaginative evening-length work that uses contemporary dance as an abstract language to question the impact of economic and social systems on our planet’s conservation. The story follows a young rural protagonist\, who\, with the help of nature’s creatures\, defies a kingdom’s control over wealth\, land\, and people. The Golden Apple is a thought-provoking and visually stunning production that challenges the audience to reflect on our interdependence with the natural world. \nChoreography by Regina Klenjoski\, original music by Michael Wall\, Poetry by Wanderer\, Costume Design by Susan Rendall with Denise Lichter\, Film by Stephen Goldblatt\, Lighting Design by Zan de Spelder and performed by Aviance Battles\, Cal Faer\, Elleigh McClelland\, Tim Portwood\, Rile Reavis\, Cydnee A. Reese and Rhiannon Vieyra. \n“The Golden Apple” is supported in part by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission\, and the Mid-America Arts Alliance.  This work was created and developed at Andover Dance Academy through a generous partnership with owner Katie Anderson.

SUMMARY:Emerson SPRING TO DANCE® Festival 2022
DESCRIPTION:RKDC will be performing Emoticons at the Emerson Spring to Dance Festival 2022 in St. Louis on May 29 at 7:30pm. \nAbout the work: \nEmoticons (2011) \nChoreography: Regina Klenjoski \nMusic: David Karagianis \nCostumes: Denise Lichter \nLighting: Original Lighting Design by Eileen Cooley \nDancers:  Aviance Battles\, Elleigh McClelland\, Timothy Portwood\, Rile Reavis\, Rhiannon Vieyra \nEmoticons is a reflection of our growing dependence on technology and its impact on interpersonal relationships.  It examines how the digital world alters our daily lives and asks\, “is technology enabling or disabling our ability to connect?”   \n“The Regina Klenjoski Dance Company oozed\, pulsed\,\nundulated\, bounced\, glided and sailed through the air in\ntheir fearlessly athletic and original “Emoticons”\, under\nthe sure artistic direction of choreographer Regina\nKlenjoski. ” – The Daily Fitchett\, Lisa Fitchett \n“Beautiful partnering and athleticism complemented the motif of communications in an electronic age.”\n-Setting the Dancer Within Free\, Vanessa Adelman \nEmoticons Artist Statement:\nEmoticons is a personal interrogation of technology’s infiltration into our social fabric. At the time of the creation process in 2011 I had three small children and was becoming increasingly concerned at how much screens had become part of our\, and their\, daily lives.  It was and still is difficult to know if our technological ways are enabling or disabling our ability to connect with one another. On one end\,  I was able to reconnect with relatives in Macedonia\, where my family emigrated from\, through social media platforms and digital communication tools that made it easy and affordable to stay in touch\, but on the other end\, I noticed at times my own family would be separated\, each sitting alone staring at an electronic device. \nAdditionally\, the work explores the theme of addiction\, specifically the way necessity transforms into unchecked desire. Emoticons has been performed in Los Angeles\, the midwest\, New York\, and this spring\, St. Louis. Audiences respond strongly to this work because its subject is universally understood.  As technology continues to “improve” our lives and our work\, Emoticons has remained relevant since its debut in 2011. \nI collaborated with composer David Karagianis because I adore his music and found it pulsing\, driving\, and relentless at times. Much like the electrical energy that powers our tech habits.  He developed a beautiful score that was both impersonal and humanistic\, juxtaposing this futuristic cold tech world with moments of humanity and warmth.  In collaborating with costume designer Denise Lichter and lighting Designer Eileen Cooley\, we used the image “plugged in” as a creative theme in our discussions. Denise chose the color grey for the costumes to represent the cold feeling of steel and hand-designed symbols on the costumes as code\, language\, and distilled communication.  Eileen developed a circuit board design through an intricate gobo design for the stage floor\, creating the digital world Emoticons lives in.  The original cast was instrumental in the development of Emoticons and included Anna Bowden\, Deven Brawley\, Danae McWatt\, Sam Propersi\, and Erin Smith. \nABOUT THE FESTIVAL: \nThe Midwest region’s most celebrated dance festival returns for the 14th year! 18 companies from coast to coast flock to St. Louis to bestow their artistry. It’s an unmatched buffet of dance\, featuring three days of nonstop bright\, beautiful dance from a wide array of nationally touring professional companies. SUMMARY:The Multiplicity of Us
DESCRIPTION:RKDC premieres a new work by choreographer and Artistic Director Regina Klenjoski\, “The Multiplicity of Us.” The dance work features a collaboration with British composer Aurelie Webb and performances by Wichita professional dancers Aviance Battles\, Elleigh McClelland\, Rhiannon Vieyra\, and Rile Reavis. \n“The Multiplicity of Us” is abstract storytelling – through poetry\, text\, and movement – examining the sometimes fluid\, sometimes difficult experience of managing our multiple identities or “hats.” Klenjoski began the work thinking about her first-generation\, bicultural identity.  Cross-cultural differences\, societal expectations\, and personal values play huge roles in how we navigate through the formative years and develop our sense of self.  The dance explores the existence of duality in our lives and celebrates the flexibility\, humanism\, and commonality we find on the way to unity. \nOTHER DETAILS: \nThe performance takes place at the Lux Ballroom in downtown Wichita. The audience will sit in close proximity to the dancers and the experience is limited to 50 patrons per show. The work is 30 minutes long and will feature a 15-minute artist talk/Q & A after each show. The venue will open 30 minutes prior to each show. Enjoy a glass of wine and the company of fellow dancegoers (all proceeds support RKDC’s artists). \nRKDC is Wichita’s only professional dance company. Come celebrate the company’s final Wichita performance this season\, bring a friend or two\, enjoy a glass of wine from Grace Hill Winery\, and experience the joy and inspiration of dance art. \nThe LUX Ballroom\nParking: easy street parking \n \n\nCredits: \nPhoto by Fernando Salazar

SUMMARY:Far From Home
DESCRIPTION:Third time’s a charm… it has been a bumpy road back to the theatre\, but we have persevered. After two separate incidents halted our production of “Far From Home” we are even more determined and excited to share this important work with you! See it Wednesday\, Dec. 8th at Sebits Auditorium on the campus of Friends University\, Wichita\, KS. \nDance is an art form like no other. There’s something magical about watching dancers moving on stage\, exuding grace and power\, telling a story through movement. \nNobody knows this better than Regina Klenjoski\, Choreographer and Artistic Director of the Regina Klenjoski Dance Company (RKDC). Regina is sharing her dance theater performance “Far From Home\, ” first performed in 2019\, with Wichita audiences. This is a story very near-and-dear to her own heart: the story of her parent’s migration to America from Macedonia more than 50 years ago. \nBut this isn’t what you might expect from a traditional dance show. The multimedia dance performance also features documentary film\, poetry\, and original music from Macedonian composer Toni Kitanovski. It’s a larger-than-life cinematic experience showing that we all have much more in common than we think. \n“Audiences can expect exquisite dancing with a company of five performers\, in very athletic and expressive movement.  The dance is really rooted in these themes that overarch the entire evening: immigration\, migration\, and home.  They can expect poetry\, original and live music\, and film. A 14-minute documentary sets the stage and opens the show. So there are many different theatrical elements that are coming together with contemporary dance. It’s very visual\, cinematic and full of moving content\,” Regina shared during her TOCA Backstage interview with Chris Wolf. \nAfter the premiere in 2019\, the pandemic prevented subsequent live performances so RKDC obtained a grant from the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission (KCAIC) to create a cinematic film of the work\, which will be filmed this November and December. All proceeds from the performance will support artist fees and production costs for the film.

SUMMARY:Poetry in Motion
DESCRIPTION:Artistic Director Regina Klenjoski will be facilitating a movement and writing workshop with Los Angeles poet Jennie Linthorst at the Kansas Literacy Festival. In Poetry in Motion: Making Connections Through Writing and Moving\, these two artists will share their methodology for integrating creative writing and embodied movement for students. Jennie guides participants in developing an autobiographical poem based on prompts from the “I am From …” poem format. Participants explore personal narratives through the home\, people\, foods\, music\, and sensory experiences of their childhood.  They then choose their favorite stanza and Regina guides them through an inclusive\, gestural movement exploration that encourages the embodiment of those memories through collaboration in small group expressive dances.  The session ends with poem sharing and reflection\, a critical part of the literacy and movement practice that deepens the connections made between personal identity\, community\, the world and art.

SUMMARY:In Full Bloom
DESCRIPTION:RKDC has partnered with Botanica to premiere two new works\, Radical Joy and US\, in the gorgeous gardens this spring. Radical Joy examines the importance of cultivating joyfulness in our lives. Through an exploration of hidden joy\, unbridled joy\, and childhood joy\, you will be treated to luscious\, expansive movement performed by Elleigh McClelland\, Max Mayerle\, Heather Eilerts\, and Rhiannon Vieyra. US is a continued development of a short dance film that premiered in Duets for My Valentine last February. How do we channel our passionate and powerful feelings to illuminate for good\, and not to cross over and enflame?  The dancers use powerful movements and gestures of patriotism and solidarity to find connection to one another. Limited outdoor seating available in order to adhere to health safety measures for physical distancing.

There’s something magical about watching dancers glide around the stage exuding grace and power\, telling a story with their movement. \nNobody knows this better than Regina Klenjoski\, Choreographer and Art Director of the Regina Klenjoski Dance Company (RKDC). Regina has created a new dance theater performance to share a story very near-and-dear to her own heart: the story of how her parents immigrated to America from Macedonia more than 50 years ago. \nBut this isn’t your average dance show. The multimedia dance performance also features documentary film\, poetry\, and original music from Macedonian composer Toni Kitanovski. It’s a larger-than-life cinematic experience showing that we all have much more in common that we think. \n“Audiences can expect really beautiful dancing. It’s a company of five performers\, very athletic and expressive movement\, but also really rooted in these themes that over-arch the entire evening\, which is immigration and migration and home. They can expect poetry\, original music\, and there will be film/documentary work that’s part of the show as well. There’s many different theatrical elements that are coming together\, not just contemporary dance. It’s very visual\, cinematic\, and it’s very visceral in its reaction. It’s very emotional content\,” Regina shared during her TOCA Backstage interview with Chris Wolf.

SUMMARY:Suite Tooth
DESCRIPTION:Choreographer Regina Klenjoski describes her company’s next Wichita appearance as “a feast for your senses.” She along with company members Sarah Frangenberg and Max Mayerle have created a series of dance works\, collectively known as “Suite Tooth\,” to be performed in the intimacy of Vanya Designs\, the studio of designer Alicia V. Ybarra. Audience members can partake in delicious desserts and purchase cocktails to complete the indulgent evening. \n“If you’ve visited Vanya Designs\, you’ll wonder how we’re going to dance there\,” says Klenjoski. “Alicia beautifully transforms the space to create intimate seating on both sides of the space\, offering a slightly different viewing experience for each audience member. Seating is limited to 50 guests per evening to keep the experience distinctive.” \nFilling that space will be a new work by Klenjoski\, “IMbody\,” a suite of dances conceived from a visceral exploration and embodiment of abstract movement ideas. Klenjoski is exploring the idea of “allowing” body intelligence to come forward and how stored human experiences in the body are expressed as meaningful stories for the viewer. Klenjoski will also share her duet “Lifeline” from “Far From Home\,” an exploration of the immigrant experience which premiered in Wichita last May. Company member Sarah Frangenberg will be premiering a new work\, “Raah\,” which aims to illustrate with movement\, the meaning of this Hebrew word and the meaning of the English word ‘raw.’ Company member Max Mayerle performs in his solo work “Aged Totems\,” a reflection on how traditional masculinity effects mens relationships and how they act in society. \nGet lost in the beauty that is DANCE as RKDC celebrates 20 years of inventive choreography\, fierce athleticism and compelling storytelling. \nChoreography: Regina Klenjoski\, Sarah Frangenberg and Max Mayerle\nPerformers: Max Mayerle\, Makayla Williams\, Nadia Khalidi\, Sarah Frangenberg \nTHANK YOU TO OUR WONDERFUL COMMUNITY PARTNERS FOR THE 2019-2020 SEASON\n\nNational Endowment for the Arts\nKansas Creative Arts Industries Commission\nWichita Arts Council\nRehearsal space generously donated by Wichita State University Dance Department\nRehearsal space sponsored in part by Kansas Dance Academy
